Charles was born in 1830 to Henry (an agricultural labourer) and Ann Croucher (nee Fryer), the eldest of their three sons. He was baptised on the 21st November 1830 at Boldre church.
The 1841 census shows the young family living in Dilton.
In 1851 Charles was working at Slade Farm as a farm servant for William and Elizabeth Whittren who farmed 120 acres there.
The 1861 and 1871 censuses list Charles boarding with John and Charlotte Wort at Harford Cottage in Beaulieu.
He was buried at the Baptist chapel by the Rev John Bartlett Burt on 27th September 1872.
