LOVING MEMORY OF

JAMES BOUND

WHO DIED OCT 30TH 1891

AGED 54 YEARS

"BLESSED ARE THE DEAD WHICH DIE IN THE LORD."

James Bound was born in 1837 to John and Anna (nee Munden), the youngest of their five children. He was baptised at Beaulieu church on 3rd Jan 1837.

His father died in 1840 and Anna brought up their children as a single parent. The 1841 census shows that son Willian (18) worked as a labourer to support the household. The 1851 census shows William (27), Edward (19) and Samuel (16) all working as labourers to support the family.

By 1861 James and his cousin John Gregory were living in Beaulieu together and working as agricultural labourers.

James married Emma Crouch (born 1840 in Beaulieu Rails) who had been in service in Winchester to the Badcock family. The 1871 and 1881 censuses show the couple living in Beaulieu village with James continuing to work as an agricultural labourer.

According to H. E. R. Widnell he had also worked briefly as the organ-blower at Beaulieu church.  This job was to supply wind to the pipes of the organ so that they could produce sound. It was not apparently a popular position as no one seems to have lasted long in the role. These days an electric fan is used.

In 1891 they lived at the Clock House on Palace Lane Beaulieu and James was working as a garden labourer.

James was buried at the chapel on 2nd November 1891 by the Rev Henry New.
